On May 18, 2023, an educational hour was held with students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Continuing Education, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People. At the event, the main information about the event was indicated, namely, May 18, 2023 marks the 79th anniversary of the beginning of the deportation of Crimean Tatars from Crimea by the Soviet regime. According to the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, May 18 was declared the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People.

The official basis for the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people was the resolution of the State Defense Committee No. 5859 “About the Crimean Tatars” dated May 11, 1944, in which the Crimean Tatars were accused of alleged mass treason and mass collaborationism during the occupation of Crimea by Hitler’s troops.

According to official data, 183,144 people were deported; according to Tatar sources, more than 400 thousand, of which about 46% of the deportees died during the first year and a half.

In 2016, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine renamed 75 units of the administrative-territorial system of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, the names of which contained symbols of the communist totalitarian regime. According to the recommendation of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, historical Crimean Tatar names were returned to the vast majority of renamed settlements, which became a practical implementation of Article 3 of the Law of Ukraine “On Restoring the Rights of Persons Deported on the Basis of Nationality”, ensuring the right of deported persons to return the historical names of settlements. which were renamed during the times of the USSR in connection with the deportation.
